This matters because biology research is increasingly computational with scientists drowning in data, while it takes roughly 10 to 15 years to go from target discovery to regulatory approval for new drugs in the U.S. The announcement caps a broader push: only a few AI-discovered or AI-designed drugs have reached clinical trials, with AI-discovered drugs experiencing similar phase 2 trial failure rates as non-AI-discovered drugs, and no fully AI-discovered drug has made it through phase 3 trials.
