Starbucks Korea is closing all stores nationwide on June 22 for mandatory staff training on historical awareness and social sensitivity after a marketing campaign referencing a 1980 pro-democracy massacre triggered public backlash. The closures will cost the company an estimated $1.4 million in sales and mark the first nationwide early closure since Starbucks entered South Korea in 1999. The training will include recorded lectures and sessions led by history and sociology professors, organized by parent company Shinsegae Group as a remedial response to the marketing misstep.
