Hungary's parliament is considering a constitutional amendment to impose an 8-year maximum term limit for prime ministers. Tisza MPs submitted the proposal, which would need a two-thirds vote to pass. If enacted, the retroactive amendment would block Viktor Orbán from returning to office after his 20-year tenure. However, the reform has not yet become law, so Orbán is not yet legally barred from seeking the premiership again. Peter Magyar, the prime minister-elect, has pledged to dismantle Orbán's illiberal governance model and bring Hungary back toward EU democratic standards. Orbán remains politically influential despite losing the premiership, so even if the term limit passes, it limits but does not eliminate his ability to shape Hungarian politics through other means.
