The FCC ordered Disney's eight ABC-owned stations to file early license renewal applications by May 28, years ahead of schedule. Officially the agency cited an investigation into Disney's diversity and inclusion practices, but the order came days after President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump called for ABC to fire late-night host Jimmy Kimmel over a joke comparing the First Lady to an "expectant widow." First Amendment advocates and Democratic FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez have condemned the move as political retaliation, while the FCC maintains it's purely about DEI compliance.
