Guys, we knew screw worm was headed north. We knew it would get here, absent profound mitigation efforts. We CHOSE to not help Mexico control it. We CHOSE to not prepare. We could have been producing and releasing millions of sterile flies daily, at a cost much less than the collapse of the Texas beef industry, but again, we CHOSE to focus on racist nazi nonsense instead. Trump, Abbot, and their goons own this, full stop. (Also, fuck the guys who voted for their own demiseβ¦)

Analysis Summary
A flesh-eating parasite called New World screwworm has been spreading northward through Central America and Mexico, reaching border states β raising concerns about potential entry into the US. The parasite hasn't been confirmed in US cattle herds yet, though officials have been monitoring for it. The post argues the US administration failed to fund prevention efforts like releasing sterile flies that could stop an outbreak before it reaches US livestock.
While sterile-fly programs are indeed a documented control method, the full picture is more complicated. US preparedness involves ongoing collaboration with Mexico and active surveillance at the border, not just domestic funding decisions. Assigning blame to a single administration for missing prevention oversimplifies what's actually a multi-country challenge requiring sustained US-Mexico cooperation. Earlier policy decisions and funding cuts may have played a role, but the core issue isn't simply that the US was unprepared β it's that screwworm control in this region depends on coordinated international efforts that go beyond any one country's prevention spending alone.
