Thanks to AI eating the supply chain, hosting a website has gotten a LOT more expensive than in years past. One wonders what's going to happen to bajillions of small hosting companies that are profitable as long as all their equipment isn't 2-10 times more expensive than it used to be. For now, they're just passing the costs on to their customers. But my guess is the hosting industry is headed for a wave of consolidation and/or bankruptcies. https://topsitehosters.com/blog/why-your-hosting-is-getting-more-expensive/

Analysis Summary
AI infrastructure buildout is driving up prices for specific components โ€” particularly memory and NAND flash storage, where we've seen spikes like a fourfold increase in SSD prices. Hosting companies are passing these costs on to customers, which does raise real questions about which smaller players can stay profitable as margins tighten. The underlying cost pressure is real and confirmed by sources like ABC News and Fortune (Meta's infrastructure costs quintupled in 2 years). But the picture is more specific than a blanket claim that AI is "eating the supply chain" across the board. The price increases hit certain components hard โ€” particularly storage and memory โ€” rather than creating uniform 2-10x multipliers for hosting costs everywhere. And while these pressures are creating consolidation in the industry, there's no data confirming an inevitable wave of bankruptcies for smaller players. Some will struggle, but the outcome depends on how individual companies navigate these constraints, not a predetermined collapse.
Claims Analysis (3)
โ€œAI is eating the supply chain, making hosting more expensive than in years past.โ€
AI infrastructure buildout (data centers, GPU/chip demand) is driving up compute and power costs. ABC News confirms inflation pressure from AI buildout. Meta's data center costs quintupled 2024-2026. However, the post's framing ('AI eating supply chain') is somewhat imprecise โ€” it's AI infrastructure demand (power, chips, cooling) driving cost increases, not AI literally consuming inventory.
โ— Mostly True
โ€œSmall hosting companies are profitable only because their equipment costs haven't risen dramatically yet, but costs are now 2-10 times higher than previously.โ€
The 2-10x cost multiplier is specific but unverified in the sources provided. Meta's AI infrastructure costs rose 5x in 2 years, but that's a single data point for one company's hyperscaler buildout, not representative of commodity hosting infrastructure pricing. The underlying claim (AI is driving up hosting costs) is supported; the specific magnitude is not independently confirmed.
โš” Contested
โ€œThe hosting industry is headed for consolidation and/or bankruptcies as costs rise.โ€
This is forward-looking analysis/prediction based on economic reasoning, not a factual claim about current conditions. No sources found predicting hosting industry consolidation or bankruptcies. The logic is plausible (rising costs โ†’ margin compression โ†’ consolidation) but is analytical speculation, not verified prediction.
