Anyone asserting encryption is a tool for crime is either painfully misinformed or is attempting to manipulate legislators to gain oppressive power over the people. Encryption is not a crime, encryption is a shield. Encryption protects you from cyberattack, identity theft, discrimination, doxxing, stalking, sexual violence, physical harm, and much more. For safety, for privacy, for democracy, and for all our human rights, it's critical that we defend our right to encryption. https://www.privacyguides.org/articles/2025/04/11/encryption-is-not-a-crime/ #Privacy #Encryption #DigitalRights #HumanRights #Democracy #RootForE2EE

Analysis Summary
Encryption does protect against the harms listed โ€” cyberattacks, identity theft, doxxing, stalking โ€” and the UK's move to restrict Apple's Advanced Data Protection in February 2026 is documented fact. The post accurately describes multiple governments pursuing encryption restrictions. However, the framing treats law enforcement concerns about encryption and criminal activity as purely oppressive or ignorant, which oversimplifies a genuine policy tension: encryption protects privacy but also shields criminal communications. The post doesn't engage with why authorities want encryption backdoors beyond dismissing them as power-grabs. The underlying factual claims hold up; the argument structure leaves out the opposing position's actual reasoning.
Claims Analysis (4)
โ€œEncryption protects you from cyberattack, identity theft, discrimination, doxxing, stalking, sexual violence, physical harm, and much more.โ€
Encryption does provide protection against many of these threats. The list is accurate but presents ideal-case scenarios; real-world protection depends on implementation and user behavior.
โ— Mostly True
โ€œIn February this year, it was reported that Apple was served with a notice from the UK's Home Office to force it to break ADP's end-to-end encryption. In response, Apple removed access to ADP from the UK entirely.โ€
This incident is well-documented. Apple did restrict Advanced Data Protection in the UK in response to regulatory pressure from UK authorities in early 2026.

โ€œThe war against encryption has affected the US, the UK, Sweden, France, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, India, Japan, and all the European Union countries with proposals such as Chat Control.โ€
Multiple countries have proposed encryption restrictions. Chat Control proposals in the EU are documented. Framing as a coordinated 'war' is interpretive, but the underlying fact of multiple jurisdictions pursuing encryption restrictions is accurate.
โ— Mostly True
โ€œAnyone asserting encryption is a tool for crime is either painfully misinformed or is attempting to manipulate legislators to gain oppressive power over the people.โ€
This is advocacy framed as fact. While some encryption restrictions may be oppressive, this binary characterization dismisses legitimate law enforcement perspectives on encryption and criminal activity.
