Europe had at least 30 years to prepare for this (if I’m generous), really it’s more like 50+. Politics, leaders and society failed. Like in Austria (where I’m from) they’re not closing schools despite it reaching up to 40°C indoors because they don’t have any law for this case. Torturing children and teachers instead of finally acknowledging that there’s an ongoing deadly emergency. Pretending that everything is fine instead of finally acting to protect life. A true boiling frog experiment.

Analysis Summary
A severe heatwave is hitting Europe right now, including temperatures above 40°C, and some countries like France have closed schools while others like Austria and the UK have not — creating genuine safety concerns about keeping children in buildings without air conditioning during extreme heat. Fuchs is right that Europe had years of climate warnings; his criticism that institutions failed to prepare is valid commentary. What's worth noting: Austria is experiencing the intense heat, and the principle there is that classes continue as normal despite the conditions, which has disappointed those hoping for closures. The actual legal mechanisms in each country and whether Austria truly has closure authority remain unclear from available reporting. The broader context matters too — this specific crisis is acute, but the policy failure reflects years of inadequate preparation rather than something unfolding in real-time that could still be prevented.

Europe had at least 30 years to prepare for this, really it's more like 50+
Climate projections have been available for decades. The specific timeframe is debatable but the underlying premise (long warning period) is factually sound.
