This — THIS — what Berlatsky said, read it, read the whole thing
and
the ICE murders are •supposed• to provoke a violent backlash from the population that will be a pretext for full domestic militarization — not the tentative NG deployments we've seen and the violence of local police force, but honest-to-god martial law in the US.
Murder is both a goal in itself and a means to other goals. Both.
I am quite certain that Stephen Miller et al •wanted• and •expected• an ICE agent to get killed in Minneapolis, assumed based on their misunderstanding of our response to the murder of George Floyd that that's what would happen, were baffled when it didn't, and finally cut back the invasion not because they were shamed out of town but because when 2–3 days passed after they killed Alex Pretti and •still• nobody killed any ICE agents in retaliation, they decided it just wasn't going to happen and they needed to try a different approach. Doesn't mean the goal has changed, just the strategy.

Analysis Summary
Two Minneapolis residents—Renee Good and Alex Pretti—were fatally shot by ICE agents in January 2026, confirmed by multiple credible sources. The post then moves from documented killings to unverifiable speculation that Stephen Miller deliberately designed the enforcement operations to provoke violent retaliation and justify martial law, and that the operations were scaled back specifically because no ICE agents were killed in retaliation. The verified facts about the deaths are real and tragic; the alleged motive (orchestrated provocation for martial law) and the claimed mechanism (timing of policy changes tied to absence of retaliation) have no supporting evidence from any credible source. The post conflates an established tragedy with speculative claims about hidden intent, using fear-based language to link separate concerns into a unified conspiracy narrative.
Claims Analysis (5)

“Stephen Miller and others in the Trump administration wanted and expected an ICE agent to be killed in Minneapolis and designed the ICE enforcement operations to provoke a violent backlash”
This is attributed speculation about internal intent and strategy. No credible sources provide evidence of Miller's expectations, motives, or the deliberate design to provoke retaliation. The deaths are verified; the alleged purpose is not.
“The ICE enforcement operations were cut back because no one killed an ICE agent in retaliation within 2-3 days after Alex Pretti's death”
No credible source provides evidence linking the timing of policy changes to the absence of retaliatory killings. This is speculative cause-effect reasoning without supporting documentation.
“Full domestic militarization and martial law in the US are the intended long-term goals of ICE enforcement escalations”
This is political analysis/interpretation of alleged intent. While critics debate ICE's role and potential civil liberties risks, this specific claim about orchestrated martial law is not verifiable from available sources.
