I'm honoured to have been elected to the Board of Directors of @fdroidorg , the most well-known #opensource alternative to Google's Play Store. :fdroid: Imagine Microsoft deciding from now on what you can install on your laptop. No internet, you can only download things through the MS app store. Apps that MS has approved. Who wouldn't find that suffocating? Yet that is what Google wants to do on our Android phones (and what Apple already has - a closed ecosystem). https://f-droid.org/en/2026/04/28/board-appointments-2026.html 1/4

Analysis Summary
Gina Plat was elected to F-Droid's Board of Directors, confirmed by the official F-Droid announcement. The core issue she highlightsโ€”Google's tightening control over Android app distribution through Play Store restrictions versus Apple's already-closed iOS ecosystemโ€”is accurate, though she frames it as intentional 'wants' rather than incremental policy enforcement. The search results show Google is indeed implementing a developer verification mandate coming in September 2026, which supports her broader point about ecosystem closure, though the context around why these policies exist (security, malware prevention) is missing from her analogy.
Claims Analysis (4)
โ€œI have been elected to the Board of Directors of F-Droidโ€
Confirmed in the official F-Droid board announcement. Gina Plat is listed as one of five newly appointed directors.
โœ“ Verified
โ€œF-Droid is the most well-known #opensource alternative to Google's Play Storeโ€
F-Droid is indeed the most prominent FOSS Android app repository, though 'most well-known' is subjective. It is the primary open-source alternative to Google Play.
โ— Mostly True
โ€œGoogle wants to do on Android phones what Microsoft hasn't done on laptops โ€” control what you can install through an approved app store onlyโ€
Google has pushed restrictions on sideloading through Play Store policies and device requirements. The 2026 developer verification mandate cited in search results supports this trend, though framing as 'wants to' implies intentโ€”it's actually incremental enforcement of existing policies.
โ— Mostly True
โ€œApple already has a closed ecosystem on phonesโ€
Apple's App Store exclusivity on iOS is well-established fact. Users cannot install apps outside the official App Store on iPhones.
