Welp. I've been using GitLab for over a decade and have been pretty happy with it. Deployed and maintained several instances, some personal, some for small hobby orgs, some for work.
But it looks like it is time to ditch GitLab for good:
> Software will be built by machines, directed by people. AI is the substrate on which future software gets built. Agents will plan, code, review, deploy, and repair.

Analysis Summary
GitLab announced a major restructuring including layoffs and a strategic pivot to agentic AI, with CEO William Staples explicitly framing software development as something machines will do with human direction. The poster, a decade-long GitLab user, is announcing they're abandoning the platform because of this direction. The restructuring is confirmed by Bloomberg, Business Insider, and other outlets reporting that GitLab will flatten management, cut 30% of its country presence, and reinvest savings into AI agent development. The poster's decision is personal preference, but the underlying business shift is real and the company's vision statement is genuine.

Confirmed by Business Insider, Bloomberg, TechWeb, and TipRanks reporting on CEO memo. Restructuring includes layoffs, flattening management, and 30% country footprint reduction.
“The poster should ditch GitLab because of this AI direction”
Personal recommendation based on disagreement with company direction. The underlying facts (restructuring, AI focus) are verified; the conclusion is subjective preference.
