reCaptcha (which is owned and operated by Google) exists solely to data-mine people. The latest iteration forces people to install an app from Google on their mobile device.
If you run a web app or site, do not use it, for any reason. You're selling out your audience or your customers (and don't even get paid for it).
As Martin says, it's yet another attempt from Google to destroy the Internet (by controlling it).

Analysis Summary
Google's new reCAPTCHA now requires Google Play Services on mobile, which breaks verification for de-Googled phones and custom Android ROMs โ multiple tech outlets confirm this. Fuchs frames it as forced app installation and pure data-mining, which is editorial but rests on verified facts about Google's data collection and the new Play Services dependency. The practical impact: privacy-focused Android users (GrapheneOS, LineageOS) can't pass reCAPTCHA challenges, effectively locking them out of sites that use it. What the post doesn't mention: site operators have alternatives like hCaptcha, Cloudflare Turnstile, and Friendly Captcha that don't require Google's ecosystem.

reCAPTCHA does collect behavioral and device data which Google uses, but 'solely' is an editorial characterization โ its stated function is bot detection.
โSite operators using reCAPTCHA sell out audiences/customers without getting paidโ
Opinion built on the verified premise that reCAPTCHA collects user data and is provided free to site operators.
